HOW DO FRACTIONAL CO2 LASERS DIFFER FROM OTHER LASERS

The fractional CO2 Victoria House Clinic Laser Hair Removal Specialist is widely recognized as one of the best options for laser skin resurfacing. However, you need to do some research first before rushing into the closest clinic that offers these kinds of treatments. There are a lot of different lasers on the market, including fractional CO2 laser variations. When it comes to the effectiveness of the treatment and the client’s safety, the quality of the laser and the medical professional administering it are just as important as anything else. Consider the following important aspects of fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing:

VERSUS FRACTIONAL ERBIUM LASERS FRACTIONAL CO2 LASERS

A fractional CO2 laser and fractional erbium laser differ significantly. The erbium laser does not penetrate the skin as deeply as the other laser, and their wavelengths are distinct. As a result, clients won’t see immediate or lasting results and will need to undergo multiple treatments. In many instances, a fractional CO2 laser delivers the best results in a single treatment because it penetrates much deeper into the skin.

Are all fractional CO2 lasers created equal

The fact that a clinic offers fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing does not guarantee that they use the best laser. There are some clinics that use cheaper lasers made overseas that don’t meet safety standards and might not have been checked by the FDA. Another thing to think about is whether the laser used in the office is owned or rented. A fractional CO2 laser needs to be calibrated precisely, and moving from one office to another could throw off the calibration. Knowing that your physician uses a fractional CO2 laser and that your safety is unaffected during treatments gives you peace of mind.

Trust Your Reputable Medical Professional When it Comes to the Kind of Laser They Use, You Must Be Able to Trust Your Medical Professional Asking all of the hard questions to learn more about the particular fractional CO2 laser they use is the best way to gain their trust. You might want to think about other options if the responses to your questions are unclear or inconsistent with the research you’ve done.

International Women’s Day 2024: Interview with Honourable Justice Stephane Jackson-Haisley of the Jamaican Supreme Court

What made you decide to pursue a career in law?

I would say my journey into the study of law happened by chance. My goal was to work in an international environment and to make a difference not only in my country but globally, so I was studying languages and international relations when I was encouraged to study law. After doing research, I recognised that the study of law had a very wide ambit and could provide many opportunities to influence the lives of others on a wider scale.

Did you face any obstacles to become a judge in your country? If so, how did you overcome these?

In the late 1990s when I entered the legal profession, the numbers of women at the Bar had started to surpass the number of men, resulting in the Bar and the judiciary being dominated by women. One consequence of that is that females must work twice as hard as their male colleagues to distinguish themselves. To distinguish myself, I had to find ways to improve my competency and develop expertise in various areas of the law. One of the main obstacles faced in achieving this was the lack of adequate, readily available educational resources to continue and improve one’s education.

I appreciated that being prepared to take on all types of cases was important to excelling in the career of law and so I created a database of cases on various subject topics which I made accessible to my colleagues. This made it easier for me to improve my knowledge base and excel in trial advocacy. I developed expertise in different areas such as extradition and doing complex criminal trials which helped to demonstrate my readiness to become a judge.

What are some highlights of your career/speciality?

My work as the Deputy Director of the Judicial Education Institute of Jamaica has been one of the highlights of my career. This has enabled me to work with, and learn from, judges from all over the world and to appreciate that training and further education is essential to effective judging. In 2014, I pursued a Masters in Judicial Studies at Duke University School of Law. In 2022, I completed the intensive study programme at the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute in Halifax, Canada and became a fellow and certified judicial educator. These experiences have equipped me to make a significant contribution to the educational development of judges. In 2014, I spearheaded the creation of a “Manual for Resident Magistrates”. In 2017 I worked with the Bench Book Committee to create “The Supreme Court of Judicature of Jamaica Criminal Bench Book”.

Another significant highlight has been my work as a Judge in the Drug Treatment Courts in Jamaica. This exposed me to the concept of problem-solving justice where judges can play a part in solving problems faced by vulnerable persons who interface with the court system.

I participated in promoting drug treatment courts throughout the Caribbean and Americas and I did a fellowship at the Organisation of American States which provided me with a platform to train judges, lawyers, social workers and law enforcement officers locally, regionally, and internationally. In 2014, I initiated the establishment of a drug treatment court in the rural parish of St Thomas where offenders who committed minor crimes while under the influence of drugs or who are mentally ill are able to receive treatment and rehabilitation. Some of them were able to improve their mental health, overcome drug dependency, gain a skill, enhance their literacy, and reduce their rate of recidivism and move on to live productive lives in their communities.

Why do you think it’s important to have women in leadership roles?

When women are in leadership roles, this provides a platform where they can share their experiences and any challenges they have faced and how they overcame them in order to become leaders. This can serve to inspire and encourage other women so that they recognise that they too can excel despite challenges and barriers they may face.

Have there been any women who have inspired you throughout your life/career?

Yes, my mother has inspired me and instilled in me the fact that getting a good education is the key to success. I was always encouraged by her to always believe in myself and recognise that hard work and preparation is the key to achieving my goals.

The Honourable Mrs. Justice Zaila Rowena McCalla, the first female Chief Justice of Jamaica, has inspired me throughout my career. As a prosecutor I appeared before her and found that the way in which she conducted her court and dealt with members of the bar and the public was admirable. She made me recognise that with determination and hard work women can excel as much as their male counterparts. Her infectious passion for education aligned with my passion for education and propelled me further to explore avenues to improve myself and assist other judges and court staff to build their capacity through further education and training.

Throughout my journey in law, I have also been inspired by the support and comradery of my female friends and colleagues and recognise that supporting and encouraging each other is important in the quest to enjoy a fulfilling and successful career.

Why do you think celebrating International Women’s Day is important?

International Women’s Day is an important way to highlight and celebrate the success of women all over the world. It is a day for women to take time out to reflect on and remember all the strides that women have made not only in the work environment but also in their communities and their families. This will give hope to women who are facing certain challenges that they can overcome obstacles and be steadfast even in the face of adversity. It is an opportunity for every woman to inspire and be inspired by other women.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was ‘Inspire Inclusion.’ What does this mean to you? Why is inclusion important?

It is a very appropriate theme. It means that no matter who you are, where you are in the world, what situation you find yourself in, there is always hope. There is something unique about all of us and we should have the confidence to find our talents and share them with others. Inclusion is important as it draws on the experience of everyone; no one is left out and it promotes diversity in all aspects of society and the recognition that it is our unique individual experiences that make us special.

What advice would you give for any girls or young women who want to pursue a career in law?

Law is one of the most diverse and impactful careers you can choose. It is the career of choice for anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of others.

Israeli forces raid Gaza hospital after killing and wounding patients | World | News

Israeli forces stormed a major hospital in southern Gaza as part of a rescue mission to find Hamas hostages.

The Israeli army said it was a limited operation to find the remains of hostages taken by Hamas terrorists. The forces raided the site after Israeli fire killed a patient and injured six others inside the hospital.

It came a day after the army tried to evacuate thousands of people who had taken shelter at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. This city has been the focus of Israel‘s offensive against Hamas in recent weeks. With no end in sight for the war, the risk of a wider conflict is growing as Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah increase attacks.

READ MORE: Joe Biden calls Netanyahu an ‘a***hole’ over military campaign in Gaza

The military claimed it had “credible intelligence” that Hamas had held hostages at the hospital and that the remains of hostages might still be inside. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief military spokesperson, said forces were conducting a “precise and limited” operation there and would not forcibly evacuate medics or patients. Israel accuses Hamas of using hospitals and other civilian structures to shield its fighters.

A released hostage told The Associated Press last month that she and over two dozen other captives had been held in Nasser Hospital. International law prohibits the targeting of medical facilities, but they can lose those protections if they are used for military purposes.

Gaza’s Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra announced that Israel had carried out a “massive incursion” with intense gunfire, injuring people who were already displaced and taking shelter. He explained that the military instructed medical staff to move all patients to an older building that wasn’t equipped to care for them properly.

Hezbollah has not taken responsibility for the rocket attack on Wednesday. However, Sheikh Nabil Kaouk, a leading figure in the group, stated they are “prepared for the possibility of expanding the war” and will respond to aggression in kind.

Meanwhile, talks about a ceasefire in Gaza have hit a roadblock, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to keep up the fight until Hamas is defeated and hostages taken in the Oct. 7 attack that triggered the conflict are returned.

Nasser Hospital is in big trouble as it tries to help lots of people hurt in the daily bombings in Gaza.

A video shows doctors rushing to move patients in a smoky hallway. They use a phone light to see in a dark room where a man yells because he’s in so much pain, and there’s gunfire outside. The videos look real and match what reporters know.

Dr. Khaled Alserr, a surgeon at Nasser Hospital, said that the seven people hurt early Thursday were already in the hospital for other injuries.

“The situation is escalating every hour and every minute,” he shared.

The army told everyone to leave Nasser Hospital and the area around it last month. But like in other hospitals, doctors say it’s not safe for patients to go or be moved, and many people who had to leave their homes because of the fighting are staying there.

“People have been forced into an impossible situation,” Lisa Macheiner from Doctors Without Borders explained.

“Stay at Nasser Hospital against the Israeli military’s orders and become a potential target, or exit the compound into an apocalyptic landscape where bombings and evacuation orders are a part of daily life.”

The international aid group, also known as MSF, had to abandon their hospital on Thursday due to safety concerns. One staff member was even held at an Israeli checkpoint just outside the facility.

The war, which has been going on for months, started when Hamas militants broke through Israel‘s defences on October 7th. They caused havoc in several communities, killing around 1,200 people and taking another 250 hostage.

During a cease-fire last year, more than 100 hostages were freed in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners. However, about 130 captives are still in Gaza, with a quarter believed to be dead.

Israel‘s Prime Minister, Netanyahu, is under pressure to secure the freedom of the remaining hostages. But his far-right coalition partners could topple his government if they think he’s being too lenient on Hamas.

In response to the attack on October 7th, Israel launched a deadly military campaign. This has resulted in over 28,000 Palestinians being killed, 80% of the population fleeing their homes, and a quarter facing starvation due to a worsening humanitarian crisis. Large areas in northern Gaza, the first target of the offensive, have been completely destroyed.

Hamas keeps attacking Israeli forces all over Gaza and says it won’t let go of the captives until Israel stops its attacks and leaves. They also want lots of Palestinian prisoners freed, including big-name fighters.

Netanyahu calls these demands “delusional.” He’s planning to make Israel‘s attacks even bigger, going into Rafah, a city on the border with Egypt. Loads of people from Gaza, which has 2.3 million folks living there, have run away to Rafah to escape the fights happening in other parts of their home by the sea.

The Health Ministry in Gaza says that since the war started, at least 28,663 Palestinians have died, and many are women and kids. They don’t say who were fighters or just regular people. More than 68,000 have been hurt in this war.

Taylor Swift is heading to the Super Bowl – triggering right-wing conspiracy theories | US News

Taylor Swift is heading to the Super Bowl – but if you believe right-wing conspiracy theorists it’s the Democrat Party who have just scored a touchdown.

Swift, a Grammy Award-winning singer who reportedly became a billionaire in 2023, has triggered suspicions that she is being used by the US defence department to psychologically manipulate people into voting for Joe Biden in this year’s presidential election.

The conspiracy theory, which has not been proven, has surfaced after Swift appeared on the field following the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the Baltimore Ravens in Maryland on Sunday.

The 34-year-old singer’s boyfriend Travis Kelce is a tight end for the Chiefs – with the pair seen kissing after he scored a touchdown to help secure the team’s place in the Super Bowl on 11 February.

Vivek Ramaswamy, who dropped out of the race to become the Republican Party’s presidential candidate earlier this month, posted on the X social media platform that the match between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will be rigged to favour “an artificially culturally propped-up couple”.

He added that he believes the couple will reveal a “major presidential endorsement” this autumn.

Mr Ramaswamy, who is now endorsing Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, wrote: “Just some wild speculation over here, let’s see how it ages over the next 8 months.”

His remarks fit in with comments made by other right-wing pundits who have suggested without evidence that all the hype around Swift, one of the most famous women in the world, could be part of a plot to drum-up hype for the Democrat Party ahead of this year’s presidential election.

Online conspiracist theorists have claimed her prominent role in US pop culture must be part of a psychological manipulation effort known as “psy-ops” – which they claim is orchestrated by the US defence department the Pentagon.

Following Swift’s appearance on the field at the NFL game, one of the most viewed posts on X came from the right-wing account End Wokeness.

It’s post said: “What’s happening with Taylor Swift is not organic and natural. It’s an op. We all feel it. We all know it.”

It comes after the Pentagon shut-down accusations from right-wing commentator Jesse Watters earlier this month, who claimed Swift was a potential “front for a covert political agenda”.

Mr Watters said: “It’s real. The Pentagon psy-op unit pitched NATO on turning Taylor Swift into an asset for combating misinformation online.”

He was referring to a clip from a 2019 NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence conference that appeared to show a presenter naming Swift as an example of a powerful influencer.

At the end of the segment, which aired during his Fox News show, Mr Watters said he had “no evidence” of the conspiracy.

The speaker in the clip, Alicia Marie Bargar, later told Business Insider that her comment was taken out of context and that she has no connection to the Pentagon or to NATO.

Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh described Mr Watters’ commentary as a “conspiracy theory”.

“We are going to shake it off,” she told Politico in a reference to a popular Swift song.

A spokesperson for Swift declined to comment.

Swift was almost entirely apolitical until 2018 when she endorsed two Democrats in Tennessee, where she lived as a teenager.

Her public support for the Democrats came after she faced scrutiny from fans on the left for her silence on various political issues

In her Netflix documentary Miss Americana, which debuted in 2020, she expressed regret over not speaking out against Mr Trump during the 2016 election.

Specialised T Cells May Trigger Severe Asthma Attacks In Older Men

Published: 20 October 2023

Scientists from the University of Southampton and La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI), in California, have uncovered a group of immune cells that may drive severe asthma. These cells gather in the lungs and appear to cause the most harm in men who develop asthma in later life.

“If you are male and you develop asthma after age 40, there’s a high chance this T cell population is in your lungs,” says LJI Research Assistant Professor Gregory Seumois, who co-led the study with LJI Professor Pandurangan Vijayanand.

The new research, published in MED, suggests asthma patients with these cells in their lungs may be more likely to have hard-to-treat, and potentially fatal, asthma attacks. Normally a doctor would give an asthma patient a general therapy to dampen their immune response, but these cells don’t respond to treatment.

The scientists uncovered these T cells, called ‘cytotoxic CD4+ tissue-resident memory T cells’, thanks to volunteers enrolled in the NHS clinic-based WATCH study. It follows hundreds of asthma patients of different ages, sexes, and disease severities. By following patients over many years, and analysing their immune cell populations, researchers are making new connections between asthma symptoms and immune cell activity.

“Once you understand the role of cells like these T cells better, you can start to develop treatments that target those cells,” says WATCH study director Dr Ramesh Kurukulaaratchy, Associate Professor at the University of Southampton and researcher at the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre.

Scientists now hope to learn more about these cells and their role in asthma development in order to develop personalised therapies for asthma patients.

How harmful T cells drive asthma

The T cells are called “memory” cells because they react to molecules that the body has previously fought off. They help protect the body from viruses and bacteria, but the same T cell memory is a big problem for asthma patients. Their misguided T cells see harmless molecules, such as pollen, and produce a dangerous inflammatory response.

Men who developed asthma later in life had an overwhelming number of these potentially harmful T cells. Their lungs should have been home to a diverse bunch of CD4+ T cell types but, in this group, more than 65 per cent of their cells were cytotoxic CD4+ tissue-resident memory T cells.

Personalized asthma treatments

Single-cell RNA sequencing by LJI scientists provides a ‘biomarker’ to help detect cytotoxic CD4+ tissue-resident memory T cells in more patients going forward.

Finding this biomarker represents a “paradigm shift” in asthma research, says Dr Kurukulaaratchy. Before now, scientists and clinicians separated asthma patients into just two groups: ‘T2 high’ and T2 low’. In a study published earlier this year, the research team showed the importance of drilling down to identify many more asthma patient subgroups; their analysis reveals that 93 per cent of WATCH subjects with severe asthma were in the T2 high category.

Study co-author Professor Hasan Arshad, Chair in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of Southampton, researcher at the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre, and Director of The David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre, Isle of Wight says: “We have to think of severe asthma as having different subtypes, and the treatment has to be tailored according to these subtypes because one size does not fit all.”

The researchers now want to use sequencing tools and other techniques to discover additional biomarkers and asthma patient subtypes.

Cytotoxic CD4+ tissue-resident memory T cells are associated with asthma severity is published in MED and is available online.

This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (grants R01HL114093, U19-AI070535, S10RR027366, and S10OD025052), the William K. Bowes Jr. Foundation; and BioLegend. The WATCH study is supported by the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the Southampton NIHR Clinical Research Facility, which are funded by the NIHR and are a partnership between the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation.

Camela Leierth-Segura: Fears grow for safety of missing Katy Perry songwriter and model | Ents & Arts News

Fears are growing over the safety of a singer, songwriter and model who co-wrote Katy Perry’s hit Walking On Air, who has gone missing in Beverly Hills.

Camela Leierth-Segura, 48, was last seen on Thursday 29 June according to the California Department of Justice’s missing persons’ page.

Officers were notified of her disappearance earlier this month, a month after friends and family were unable to make contact with her, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Her 2010 silver Ford Fusion car is reported to have been captured on CCTV on the night after she was last seen, but has not been seen since.

She is also understood to have been evicted from her apartment shortly before she went missing. Her 19-year-old cat Morris is also missing.

Friends of the Swedish-born musician now say they fear she could have been kidnapped.

Her friend, fellow-model Cecilia Foss, told The Independent it was out of character for Leierth-Segura not to be in touch, and said: “My worst fear is that someone has her, and is hurting her.”

Ms Foss also told ABC7 eyewitness news she feared the worst, saying: “I’d like to think that nothing bad happened, but do I think something bad happened? Yeah”.

Speaking on the same outlet, neighbours have said they haven’t seen the musician in weeks, noting that the previously well-tended plants on her balcony were now dead.

‘Extremely worried’

Another friend, Liz Montgomery – who filed a missing person’s report for Leierth-Segura in the first week of August – urged for help on social media, posting on Instagram: “This is a personal friend of mine. A best friend. People are asking so, YES! PLEASE SHARE – HELP NEEDED! My dear friend of over 25 years is missing. LAST SEEN IN BEVERLY HILLS ON JUNE 29,2023,” she wrote.

“We are extremely worried about her safety, and despite our best efforts, the local authorities have not been able to locate her. If you have any information, even the smallest detail can help, please reach out immediately”.

‘Time is of the essence’

A GoFundMe page set up by Leierth-Segura’s sister in Sweden says: “We are extremely worried about her safety and despite our efforts, the local police have not been able to locate her.

“If you have any information, even the smallest detail can help, please reach out immediately”.

The fundraising page goes on: “She means the world to us and time is of the essence! Her family and loved ones in Sweden plead for your help!

“Please spread the word -share this fundraiser and help us bring Camela home safely”.

Around 30,000 Danish Krone have so far been raised, with the family say will go towards putting up a reward and covering expenses including costs for private detectives.

Aside from co-writing Walking On Air, Leierth-Segura recorded a cover of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra’s Some Velvet Morning alongside Swedish death metal band Entombed, and has released songs on YouTube and Spotify under her stage name Camila Leierth.
